"The packaging scorecard is a significant initiative that will ultimately help build a more sustainable supply chain and bring increased accountability to brand owners and suppliers of products to Wal-Mart."1

- Kalo Amundson, Director of Wal-Mart Operations, Bellisio Foods2, in January 2008.

"As two of Wal-Mart's goals are to create zero waste and to sell products that sustain our resources and environment, a focus on sustainable packaging naturally plays a major role in achieving these goals. As an industry leader, Wal-Mart wants to drive innovation in packaging."3

- Matt Kistler, Senior Vice-President of Sustainability at Wal-Mart, in September 2007.

Introduction

On February 01, 2008, the US-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (Wal-Mart), the world's largest retailer, officially started using the Packaging Scorecard to evaluate its suppliers on their performance in ensuring environment friendly packaging. The company claimed that with the help of the Scorecard, buyers could make 'more informed buying decisions'.

Matt Kistler (Kistler), Senior Vice President of Sustainability at Wal-Mart, said, "The packaging scorecard helps everyone make better decisions that are good for business, our customers, and the environment. It's important to us that our suppliers see the intrinsic value behind sustainability, both for their business and the environment.
